Davis Commends Bush Support of the Federal Marriage Amendment

Local lawmaker echoes President's sentiments that an amendment is needed to protect marriage

Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis today commended President Bush for supporting H.J. Res. 56, the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would add an amendment to the Constitution defining marriage under law as the union of a man and woman, and also empowers the states and not the courts, to determine the allocation of the benefits and privileges traditionally associated with marriage.

"I commend President Bush for taking a strong stand in favor of marriage, and for supporting the proposed constitutional amendment to protect one of our most cherished institutions," said Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis, who is an original co-sponsor of this legislation dating back to 2002. "The Federal Marriage Amendment will help end current attempts to undermine traditional marriage through judicial activism in the courts, and I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of this legislation," added Davis.

"The fate of marriage as we know it should not lie in the hands of judges and attorneys. It should be decided by the democratic process. This amendment would allow the people's voices to be heard. The basic belief that marriage is a union between a man and a woman is overwhelmingly supported nationwide, which is why efforts to tear down the traditional definition of marriage have been focused at the judicial level, where the American people do not have a voice," said Davis.

"The US House of Representatives and the US Senate have overwhelmingly voted in favor of definition of marriage legislation, thirty eight states have definition of marriage laws, and the American public overwhelmingly supports legislation to define marriage as a man and a woman. Yet rogue judges continue to disregard this, and legislate from the bench. This amendment will once and for all protect marriage from attempts to undermine this sacred institution," added Davis.
